When planning your family session, you might feel that you have to choose between classic portrait and candid photos?! But why settle for just one?! As a Virginia family photographer, I’ve honed in on my style and can give you a gallery full of BOTH! My family sessions include a mix of both, capturing the beauty of a posed portrait and candid photos that feel REAL.
I’ve been photographing this family for 7 years now! I see them every year, and each year we have the BEST time. Being able to photograph them through the years has brought a sense of comfort between us all. The kiddos can be themselves, and their parents are just as relaxed having fun! This makes it sooo easy to get those portraits and candid photos they LOVE. And it leaves us time to truly have FUN together!
So, what is the difference between portrait and candid photos?!
Timeless Portraits
Portraits are the posed photos. The ones that you might frame on your grandma’s wall. The photos where everyone is generally smiling, looking right at the camera. These are the Christmas card photos you’ll send to everyone. They are posed with clear direction, and I aim to make sure everyone is perfectly in the frame, hair is flowing beautifully, and everyone is just right. While it might feel a little more rigid, these photos are STUNNING. These are some of my FAVORITE photos because they really do capture everyone!
The Magic of Candid Moments
Candid photos are where all the magic and movement happen! These are the unposed moments that capture the giggles, the run into your arms, the laughing between siblings, or the kisses shared between everyone. These are the moments that just happen. While I might give you prompts or simple directions, I really try to let your kids take control. I want these to feel like the moment, be authentic, and give everyone a chance to let their personality shine!
Ready to book your adventurous family photos in the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains or my studio to for that cozy at-home feel?! I’d love to have you!! When booking your family session, keep in mind that I really do try to get you a gallery filled with both portrait and candid photos. While my style does tend to capture more candid, real and authentic moments, I know the importance of having those card-worthy smiles!
