For expectant mothers already blessed with a little one, you may be wondering if it would be appropriate bring your toddler along to share in the Maternity Session photo magic. And my answer is always: yes, absolutely! These photos aren’t just about celebrating the baby on the way; they’re about honoring this moment in time in your legacy. And your toddler? They’re a big part of that.
Recently, I held a session where the mom-to-be brought her little one along, and it was such a great reminder of how beautifully moments can unfold when we follow the toddler’s lead. Our only goal was to let him come and go as he pleased. He snacked, explored, and only cried once (which honestly is a total win in my book).
So what made this Maternity Session go so smoothly? Bringing Backup.
The best decision this momma made was having her beloved Mother-in-Law join as an extra set of hands to help. Any time Big Brother became restless, Grandma was right there to comfort him. Together they adventured the outside area surrounding my studio, which conveniently lays along the river. Luckily there’s always plenty of ducks, fish, and shady spots to explore. He was able to reset and rejoin us feeling refreshed. It gave him space to just be, without any forced smiles or obligatory pressure.
Once he was ready, we invited him in front of the camera with his Mom and her beautiful belly. Because he felt cared for and nourished by the experience (not startled or coerced) we were able to capture completely organic interactions. We got the sweetest frames of him loving on his momma’s belly and holding hands, plus plenty of big hugs to go around. The result was a set of images that felt true to their family: warm and full of gentle love.
Toddlers are unpredictable by nature. However, when we are patient and allow them to engage in the process on their own terms then the real magic takes place. So if you’re still considering if your little one should join in on your upcoming maternity session, take this advice from a seasoned newborn & maternity photographer:
bring snacks, bring backup, and bring your toddler exactly as they are.
You’ll be so glad you did.
