Wondering how to style a family of five for your photo shoot! This is all for you!!
One of my favorite parts of being a Virginia family photographer is helping my clients with styling. I know firsthand how overwhelming it can feel to coordinate outfits for multiple people, which is why I offer full styling support (and access to my client closet, which has hundreds of pieces for moms and kids!).
When you book a session with me, whether it’s a bright outdoor shoot like this one, or a cozy studio session, you don’t have to stress about what everyone will wear. I’ve got you covered.
For this sunflower session, I picked a soft blue dress for mama. The off-shoulder, flowy design not only photographed beautifully but also popped perfectly against the bright, sunny yellow blooms. Her three little ones wore outfits that complemented the palette without competing: soft neutrals, earthy tones, and textures that added depth to the images. Dad kept it classic in a navy polo and khaki pants, grounding the whole look.
When thinking through how to style a family of five for your shoot, I’m always starting with mom’s outfit first. Then I will pull pieces for your little ones. I have a very few pieces for the men, but mostly they just stick with neutral pieces to tie everything together! (And most dads have these in their cloest alreaedy!)
For this shoot, it was Sunflower season in Virginia. That’s always a favorite for my clients, and it’s easy to see why. The golden blooms create such a dreamy, vibrant backdrop for family photos. This session was no exception!
It’s no accident that this family’s wardrobe worked so seamlessly with the location. When I’m styling your session, I’m always looking at where we’ll be shooting and what the light and colors will look like. For example, sunflower fields call for something with a little more color. While a moody, overcast mountain shoot might have me pulling deeper jewel tones or cozy knits instead.
The result? A family of five that not only looks amazing together but also feels comfortable and confident in front of the camera.
And that’s what really matters. When you feel good, the joy shines through in every single photo. That’s why I’m very intentional with my styling process!
This sunflower field session was full of laughter, snuggles, and those sweet in-between moments that remind you why photos matter so much in the first place. Styling was just the starting point, but it’s what allowed their natural connection and love to really stand out.
So, if you’re dreaming of family photos that feel effortless and true to you, know that I’ll be there to style you every step of the way. All you have to do is show up ready to love on your people. I’ll take care of the rest.
