Some of my favorite sessions are when I get to photograph a whole lineage during Generational Family Portraits. Those rare, meaningful moments when multiple generations come together in front of the camera. I had the pleasure of photographing a high school senior, and what started as a simple graduation shoot turned into something truly special:
A full family gathering that became a lasting treasure.
The senior’s family had come from near and far to celebrate the big milestone. His mom saw the perfect opportunity and decided to make the most of everyone being together. With a little planning ahead, we expanded the session beyond just the senior, to include parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, and uncles. One of the most touching moments was photographing the mom with her father, who is nearly 90! Knowing how meaningful it was to them both and capturing their connection reminded me why this work is so important.
These kinds of milestone events; graduations, anniversaries, or reunions; are the perfect backdrop for Generational Family Portraits. They’re already full of love and laughter, and everyone’s dressed up, and gathering in the spirit of celebration. Adding a photo session into the mix is not only convenient, but a way to freeze that special togetherness in time.
And let me tell you, everyone truly enjoyed the experience. There was laughter, reminiscing, and plenty of hugs. The result is a beautiful collection of images that the family will treasure forever.
Keepsakes that will be looked at for decades, passed down through the very generations we photographed that day.
My biggest takeaway from this session is that time is precious! So if you’re planning for a big event or milestone, think about the opportunity it offers for Generational Family Portraits. With just a bit of coordinating, you can turn any portrait session into something even more meaningful.
