This family of 4 maternity session was so much fun to style and shoot! My family was so laid back and happy, I had a great time documenting this season of life for them! With baby number two on the way, the joy was palpable from the moment they walked through the doors of my fine art studio in the historic district of Occoquan. As a Virginia newborn photographer, I get to see families through such amazing transitions. I know bringing life into this world is a big undertaking with lots of missed sleep and hard work – so knowing I am documenting the incredible journey for them to look back on in the years to come is something that makes me so happy.
We started the day slowly — with intention. Mama arrived early for hair and makeup, giving her a quiet moment to be cared for and pampered before stepping in front of the camera. So much of pregnancy is about preparing for others, and it’s always my goal to create space where expecting mothers feel seen, celebrated, and deeply beautiful. And get to kick off their shoes and relax for a while!
For this session, we styled the whole family in soft white pieces (and eventually some denim too!) — a timeless, clean palette that allowed the love between them to take center stage. The older brother was absolutely glowing with excitement about becoming a big sibling. We made sure to capture a few portraits just for him — because every big brother deserves a moment to shine, too. And it helps them feel included in the process! Everyone in the family is important!
After we captured all the fun group shots of this family of 4 maternity session, we pivoted to just mama!
We transitioned to a soft brown matching set—an understated long-sleeve crop and coordinating bottoms that highlighted her bump in the most elegant, fine art way. There’s something incredibly powerful about capturing a mother during this season—her body, her energy, her anticipation, all telling a story that deserves to be documented beautifully.
We wrapped the session with one of my favorite gowns from the client closet: a sheer, ethereal overlay that flowed effortlessly and accentuated every curve of her growing belly. These final portraits were soft and striking all at once—the kind of images that will only grow more meaningful as time passes. And that’s my goal as a Virginia newborn photographer: to create heirloom images you will treasure the rest of your life.
Every session is different, but what stays the same is this: these moments are fleeting. The stretch of time between growing your family and meeting your baby moves quickly. That’s why I’m so passionate about creating imagery that pauses the rush, honors the in-between, and tells your family’s story exactly as it is—full of love, wonder, and anticipation. S
